ReplyDeleteTo have public toilets readily accessible to the public is also a problem even in the US. Having one built is no problem but the cost of keeping it clean costs a lot money due to the high cost of labor. Besides, we have the homeless who would use public toilets to take baths, sexual and illegal activities. However, restaurants such as MacDonald’s have helped solving this problem in downtown areas while gas stations along the highways. In Hong Kong, labor cost is secondary but land is so expensive that the government rather auctions it off for mega millions. In mainland China, for kids to pee or discharge in hidden alleys has been a common and acceptable practice.
By the way, I recently learned that besides medicines, name brands, and jewelry being the hot items which the millions of Chinese mainlanders would buy while visiting Hong Kong, there is one more item. That is, magazines and publications on gossips particularly those relating to the high echelons in the Chinese government. In the US, such gossips are more or less open to the public and considered No Big Deal.
