ReplyDeleteAs a former tour operator, I’m aware of all these overcharging and tricks done by the souvenir vendors and tour agents in China. And even in Hong Kong but not to such an extent.
Before China became an economic power, I did play along and pay accordingly considering it a donation to the country. But now, No. Not even a penny. Now here were two example cases which I personally witnessed but not having got caught:
1. A guy with a horse offering ride to tourists for RMB 5. Seemed reasonable, isn’t it. But in the end the guy would charge RMB 5 for each step the horse made.
2. At a museum carrying the sign “government operated,” fake antiques were sold as authentic with official certificates. Then for Chinese paintings, the guy would ask for RMB 1,000 but would follow you to the exit and started saying: “For you Overseas Chinese coming from afar, how about RMB 100?...” . I did get caught in a small way having bought some fake ancient Chinese coins.
I wonder if these tricks are still done. One thing that’s going on here is that 7 Day China Tour for only US$99.00 + airfare. It includes only hotel accommodation but still sounds a great deal. Only US citizens are eligible, but for anything extra there will be additional charge. And the tours members are lead to shops after shops almost constantly.
